The Hartford iQuilt Plan

THE HARTFORD iQUILT PLAN

HARTFORD, CT | The iQuilt Plan, an initiative concerning three corridors in downtown Hartford, Connecticut, offers a bold and historic approach to placemaking in which each patch of public and private projects, including parks, plazas, streets, and sidewalks, contributes to the area’s overall pattern or quilt. MVLA joined Suisman Urban Design to develop an array of physical and programmatic improvements to this network of public space. One such effort revitalized a historic waterway in Bushnell Park by bringing it back to the surface after decades of being buried beneath a culvert; another involved enhancing a 12 block Main Street to reflect its historic and cultural significance, foster social and economic activity, and incorporate green infrastructure along its length. In undertaking projects such as these to connect Hartford’s people, places, and culture, iQuilt has created a more vibrant, prosperous, and sustainable city.
