MATT JOHNSTON

SENIOR ASSOCIATE

Matt’s project approach embodies the practical creativity of landscape architecture. A generalist by education and disposition, he joined MVLA in 2008 as a versatile team player, adept at designing for a variety of scales and programs.  He especially enjoys the intricacies of site grading and the challenges of project management.

Growing up, Matt spent summers working for the family business, a rock quarry and road-building operation in rural Arkansas. His interest in landscape architecture developed gradually, through travel, reading, and a genuine curiosity about why some places are better than others.  After a brief period working on Capitol Hill, he returned to school to pursue graduate degrees in landscape architecture and urban planning.  He values the lessons learned from the design and construction process, and is happiest to see the built realization of a well-conceived and communicated design.
